Rigor and Relevance Framework

DESCRIPTION:

This session focuses on using rigor and relevance to keep students engaged. By consistently challenging students with well-­‐planned rigorous and relevant learning activities, teachers can create a learning environment which is productive and produces high achievement levels.


Session A – Learn and apply the rigor and relevance framework. Review lessons and assessments to determine where they fall on the framework.


Session B – Participants will practice how to move lessons among the four rigor and relevance quadrants. Using their curriculum, teachers create lessons and questions with higher levels of rigor and relevance.

OBJECTIVES:

Essential Question – How does the consistent use of rigor and relevance increase engagement?

  • Understand and apply the rigor and relevance framework
  • Discern example lessons’ place on the framework continuum
  • Use the application model decision process to determine how rigorous a lesson is
  • Develop rigorous and relevant lessons using existing curriculum

SESSION LENGTH:  Session A = 2 hours; Session B = 2 hours
